Delicious & Ambitious: Endangered Species Chocolate

Choco cravings and a photo of a bat (the flying kind), had me grasping the 3 ounce bar of Endangered Species Chocolate’s ‘Intense Dark Chocolate with Cacao Nibs’. Becoming more than an impulse buy, this sweet deal was sealed by their forward-looking stances, including a donation of “10% of net profits to help support species, habitat, and humanity”. This giving program has recently invested in the African Wildlife Federation, Ocean Conservancy, as well as providing basic education opportunities in Nigeria.

While chocolate has a flavorful history of more than 3,000 years, Endangered Species Chocolate is creating a hopeful future for the industry by donating ten percent and:

1. Stopping the common use of often dangerous, sometimes forced child labor. A Tulane University Report (funded by the US Department of Labor) refers to cacao production as exhibiting “the worst forms of child labor”. While other brands take initial steps toward reform, Endangered Species Chocolate products are already 100% ethically traded, ensuring humane working conditions and fair farmer compensation.
2. Reduction of herbicides and pesticides found in various analyses including the US Food & Drug Administration’s ‘Total Diet Study’. Endangered Species Chocolate line-up includes a number of USDA Certified Organic bars.
